The word Neutral pH is all the rage for many brands, products and cosmetics, especially those that are sanitising, but what does pH neutral mean?
The abbreviation pH refers to the Hydrogen Potential a measure that determines the degree of acidity or alkalinity of a substance. This measure fluctuates on a scale from 0 to 14, with the middle level (7) being the neutral value. It is important to note that any value below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline.
That said, it is worth noting that hair is in an ideal state when it is positioned at pH 5 or 5.5 (this is its neutral pH), since the cuticle is closed, making the strands shiny and preserving their natural oiliness. But, if this value rises the cuticles open leaving the hair totally dry and devitalised, this is one of the processes that the dye generates to be able to pigment each strand.
Shampoos, too, are formulated with surfactants, which, if they are very abrasive, unbalance our hair's pH, aggravating the health of our hair.
However, not all people and not all products are the same, because depending on the type of hair (oily, normal and dry) the pH and the products suitable for it will depend on the type of hair.
If your hair is normal, shiny and silky, this means that its physiological functions are not altered. If, on the other hand, your hair is oily, the pH of your hair is alkaline, so a treatment with pH 6 to 7 is required. But if your hair is dry, its pH is acidic and a shampoo with pH 5 to 5.5 is recommended, as well as for babies and children.
